The Design of Everyday Objects.
The creation of every new product design follows a stage gated process, tailored to the unique scope and complexity of the project brief. The full process from the beginning to a production product can be set out within the following 6 headings.
01 Discovery
I begin each project by understanding your business, project objectives and constraints. Combining your expertise with my experience in product innovation, I define a clear framework and identify trends and opportunities that will shape the strongest design route.
02 Concept Design
The most exciting stage of any project where ideas are challenged, the imagination is stretched and new ideas begin to come to life. At least 3 distinct concepts are explored and visualised for review. An initial clear direction for the product's form and function begins to be realised.
03 Design Refinement
Your chosen design route is refined & developed in SolidWorks 3D CAD. During this stage the concept can be visualised as a convincing photorealistic concept. This allows the design to be internally presented and visually critically evaluated at an early stage.
04 Prototyping
Prototyping is the only way to fully verify a design ergonomically and functionally during product development, identifying issues early in the process. I offer SLA 3D printing to iteratively test rigs and design concepts as they are developed.
05 Detailed Development
The CAD design is refined and developed. Any flaws identified during prototype review are designed out of the assembly. The design is detailed and readied for final testing and for looks like/works like prototyping.
06 Design For Manufacture
The designs are finalised with manufacturing detailing added to the 3D model. A 3D & 2D drawing pack is produced which can be used to begin communication with manufacturers. I also offer liaison to manufacture, supplier selection services and high quality product visualisation for marketing use.
